It has not gone unnoticed that over the past decade IBM has quietly and not so quietly been gobbling up data analytics providers to add to their own lukewarm, in-house, products.  A recent article on Beyond Search, “IBM and Its Analytics Roll Up”, explains of how despite IBM’s investments in data analytics and its projected $16 billion revenue by 2015 they may not be as intimidating an opponent as it appears.
The article sums up IBM’s investments and offers a word of advice:
“IBM will have to demonstrate that it can create a portfolio of solutions which can compete with the lower cost, cloud centric approaches that are proliferating. IBM has an anchor in open source search for unstructured data and a number of specialized luxury yachts for structured data. From a distance the fleet looks formidable. Up close, the same vulnerability teenagers in a skiff exploit in commercial shipping traffic may exist.”
With the latest data analytics and data management winners basing their solutions on cloud technologies with impressive results and a cloud-based data analytics industry primed to exceed all expectations in the upcoming year it is no surprise that one would question IBM’s domination of this industry.

Open source software and cloud-based services continue to propel businesses into the twenty-first century. For the last 25 years or so, the open source community has been thriving. As there are no signs of this movement slowing, ArnoldIT has released a new information service called OpenSearchNews.

Similar to other services offered by ArnoldIT such as Beyond Search, OpenSearchNews tracks the evolution of any industry related news offering critical commentary and pointing readers in the direction of other credible sources of information. The free service publishes Monday through Friday.
Emily Aldridge, the information service’s editor explains in the press release announcing the service :
“Open source search has become a fast-growing segment of the enterprise search and big data markets. The number of companies competing in this segment is growing. The phenomenon is global with solutions available from Canada, the Danish Library, and entrepreneurs in the Russia. We are reporting on the companies, trends, and products which offer an alternative to the seven figure solutions from proprietary enterprise search solutions.”
Business-minded professionals will be sure to benefit from the wealth of information on open source products OpenSearchNews provides. Discerning fact from fiction often proves difficult amid the massive amount of marketing jargon used to pump up products from some vendors. We expect to see this new information service land above such convoluted language.

A recent white paper by Beyond Search’s own analyst, Stephen Arnold, “Cutting Big Data Down to Size: The PolySpot Solution,” tackles the issue of high-volume data flow by taking an in-depth look into PolySpot’s Information at Work Solution.

Arnold gives much credit to the France-based company for creating a revolutionary system that offers an easy-to-use solution to Big Data, making data available and thus valuable to companies. Information from ArnoldIT’s investigation is summarized on PolySpot’s website:

“PolySpot has developed an innovative approach that makes it possible to deploy a robust frame-work over existing content repositories. The PolySpot technology allows licensees to access information from many different sources and deliver information that answers real-life business questions. Users access the content via applications or apps from mobile devices to desktop computers. The company delivers solutions+apps.”

Our team at Beyond Search is glad to see PolySpot offering business intelligence solutions that are much needed in the search enterprise world. This technology is necessary in ensuring that information of significant value is not lost in the petabytes of information that is growing daily.

We pay careful attention to companies which are flourishing in the realm of product data apps. The growing amount of product data which is generated within different sources is often of mixed file type and structure. Companies are wise to manage and control this information creatively, particularly in the rising world of mobile applications.

One such company, Inforbix, is focused on solving data overload in manufacturing. The company is revolutionizing how SolidWorks users receive value from engineering and manufacturing data.

We recently commented on how Inforbix released an iPad app allowing users to search engineering data, anywhere, anytime. Inforbix is now announcing two new apps that seamlessly aggregate product data from different sources, file types, and locations.

Inforbix is a Boston-based software company founded in 2010 that addresses product data challenges within manufacturing companies. The company strives to develop software solutions and apps to address an excess of information in the field. Inforbix is currently a cloud service accessed by web browser and assists companies in addressing data trends and improving productivity.

All Inforbix apps use product data semantic technology to infer relationships between disparate sources of data. These apps allow users to find, re-use, and share product data. The two new apps, which will be available immediately, are Inforbix Charts and Inforbix Dashboard and can be previewed at http://www.inforbix.com/product.

Inforbix Charts uses data saved in Inforbix Tables and presents the information in charts to help engineers manage and run processes by identifying trends. Inforbix Dashboard collects and presents statistics about engineering and manufacturing data and processes and is ideal for project managers. Both apps are simple and intuitive to use.

CEO Oleg Shilovitsky comments on the release of the new apps in a recent news release:

“We are delighted to be a part of SolidWorks World 2012. Inforbix is proud to be a SolidWorks partner, and together with SolidWorks will help provide our customers excellent product data access capabilities.

With Inforbix Charts and Inforbix Dashboard, Inforbix continues to deliver the industry’s only cloud-based product data access apps. All Inforbix apps are designed from the ground up using manufacturing customer feedback, so we know they will begin adding value to both our existing and new customers from the moment they start using them.”

Inforbix apps and product data are available online, and the app will soon be available for Android devices. The app can be downloaded by current customers at the Apple App Store and be previewed at http://www.inforbix.com/inforbix-ipad-app-first-preview/. For more information on Inforbix apps, visit http://www.inforbix.com. New users can register with Inforbix to enable the app and begin accessing company product data.

At HighGain Blog, we stand by companies that are focusing on solving business information problems in innovate ways.  We are impressed with Inforbix’s move to mobile apps. Technology is changing drastically and companies need to remain accessible in the transition.
